"A book, a bible and a beach" picks up two gongs at the Bloomsday Film Festival

August 6, 2023

Lights, camera, action!! We were already thrilled out of our boots to be shortlisted in the Bloomsday Film Festival but we truly hopped out of our chairs when we received an award for Best Joycean short.

The festival runs for a week around Bloomsday on the 16th of June, when the people of Dublin take to the streets to commemorate and celebrate the life of Irish writer James Joyce. The celebration takes it name after Ulysses' protagonist Leopold Bloom and the film festival champions films created around a Joycean theme.

This wonderfully cinematic piece was the culmination of a year-long creative audiences partnership between Liz Roche Company and community groups soloSIRENS, The SAOL Project and Headway Ireland. Directed by Liz Roche and our long-standing creative collaborator Jose Miguel Jiménez, the piece interweaves pieces of text, dialogue and movement through the various people we encounter around the streets of Dublin and Sandymount strand.

Our screening was held on the sunny upper floors of the characterful James Joyce Centre located in an iconic Dublin Georgian house on North Great Georges Street with the awards ceremony in Stoneybatter's IFI. We toasted our win with the appropriately names "Writers Tears Whiskey".
